Slinky! A Slinky. Everyone loves a Slinky!

Do you remember playing with a Slinky as a kid? You know, Mattel's famous walking Spring Toy. Isn’t it funny how such a simple thing, really nothing more than a metal coil, managed to amuse and entertain so many young minds? I remember watching their commercials during Saturday morning cartoons and smiling with delight, to watch a Slinky wriggle down the stairs! Things seemed so simple then . . .

Have you ever noticed how some people are like a Slinky? Although they're not good for much, it still makes you smile to push them down the stairs.

Dear Anonymous,

I'm sure you have! And, just as with me, I'm sure it made you smile the first time you heard it. But I'm fairly confident that you haven't heard it quite the way I've told it here. I've always maintained that the art of a joke is in the telling. Just as so many photographers have photographed the beautiful Yosemite scene of the waterfall at Half Dome that Ansel Adams made famous, so have many jokesters shared this Slinky joke. And, just as many photographers' Yosemite Falls images have fallen short of conveying the beauty portrayed by Adams, so have many of the purveyors of this joke fallen short of titillating their audience. Granted, art is a subjective thing; however, I've seen some views of Yosemite falls that I think rival (or even surpass!) the original work by Adams. So, too, is the telling of a joke. I simply mean to convey the humor I found in this joke in a way that has been personalized by me and, hopefully, even elevated on par with the original. I believe that the artful telling of a joke, like the viewing of a fine art print, should evoke emotion. By my definition, that is what makes it art.

Cheers,
-Mike.

Disregard the anonymous hecklers Mike. Your version of the slinky joke was the first one I'd heard, and due to my twisted sense of humor, found myself snorting and laughing out loud at work. I can really appreciate a well told joke. Keep the humor coming.
